There are so many incredible things that one witnesses when working with children who have cancer. Julianna and her family embody all of them.
Julianna came to medical attention when her mother noticed a small lump behind her ear. What was originally thought to be a small cyst or inflamed lymph node ultimately was found to be a small muscle tumor called rhabdomyosarcoma. It was in part through the persistence of Julianna’s mother, and her amazingly strong advocacy on behalf of her daughter, that Julianna’s tumor was diagnosed quickly, allowing a treatment plan to be implemented in a prompt manner.
Once Julianna started on her treatment, we were all lucky to be able to share in her amazing energy and spirit. One of the best aspects of treating children Julianna’s age is to be able to share in their development. Because she came to us when she was about 18 months old, over the past year we have watched as she has grown and developed. Where she would previously sit on her mother’s lap and watch our every move, today she delights in running and climbing around the room. And where before our conversations would be one way, today it is a pleasure to get to listen to Julianna’s answers to our questions. To see her now - full of life, inquisitive, and charming - one would never know that she endured six months of chemotherapy. We also take a great deal of pleasure in seeing how happy her parents are with her recovery, and look forward to following her continued growth and development for many years to come.
Julianna is winning her fight against cancer.
